Rose with Jacqueline Matter, the morning anchor on FOX5 Mornings and Good Day D.C. before our TV interview on September 19th, 2024
Did you know that October is National Self-Promotion Month? It’s a time to embrace the art of self-promotion, a skill many of us unknowingly start developing from a young age. Self-promotion isn't just about tooting your own horn; it’s about showcasing your unique talents, skills, and achievements in a way that resonates with others.
In fact, we begin learning self-promotion early on, often without even realizing it. Take my daughter, Rose, for example. Her school teacher, Mr. Nicholas Loewen, recently assigned her class the task of writing poems about themselves. This exercise encourages young minds to reflect on who they are and express that in a creative way. Rose's poem beautifully encapsulates the essence of self-awareness and individuality, which are foundational to self-promotion. Here’s what she wrote:
Me, Myself, and My World
By Rose Satchell
My name is Rose,
I am found in everyone,
I am as basic as a potted plant,
But I am seen through many globes,
And they have seen me in many shapes.
My father’s emerald eyes,
Combined with my mother’s golden locks,
Swirled with my fair skin,
Make me.
My house is never empty,
Click! Clack!,
The sign of my parents at work,
I am trapped with my mountains of homework,
And my parents with their work.
My large family does console me,
9 hours in the air is all that it takes to get to my mother’s land,
Pierogies and vodka,
And 7 hours to get to my father’s land,
Filled with teas.
Some might say that I am easy to describe,
I disagree, for I am different with everyone,
With some, a mouse,
For others, thunder,
That is why I am a playlist full of songs,
Sometimes I am a rock song,
Or an orchestra.
Where is the vodka coming from... I have no idea. I'm proud to be Polish, I guess :)
However, this exercise reminded me that self-promotion, at its core, is about knowing who you are and having the confidence to share that with the world. Just like Rose reflected on the different aspects of her identity, we must learn to highlight the unique traits that make us stand out. Whether it’s at work, in personal relationships, or in public spaces, self-promotion allows you to control your narrative.
Why Self-Promotion Matters
Many people feel uncomfortable promoting themselves because they fear coming off as boastful. But here’s the thing: self-promotion is essential, especially in today’s competitive world. It’s about communicating your value in an authentic, engaging way. You’re already your own brand, and it’s time to market yourself effectively!
Some might say, "But how do I promote myself?" The good news is, self-promotion comes in many forms. Here are some ways you can get started:

Let me share a personal example of self-promotion in action. A few weeks ago, my daughter Rose and I had the opportunity to appear on Fox 5 News Washington D.C. to share tips about what to do after travel. We talked about practical post-travel safety measures, like sanitizing your luggage, inspecting your home, and checking your bank account, along with wellness tips to ensure a healthy return. It was an incredible chance to promote not only our expertise but also to highlight wellness practices that benefit travelers and my business.
